The Transportation Agency for Monterey County seeks a Transportation Engineer who can independently manage and provide input on the design and delivery of priority regional and local projects in coordination with Caltrans and our member agencies.  The position will be filled at the appropriate level within the Transportation Engineer job classification (Associate, Senior or Principal) based on qualifications.  The Transportation Agency has an excellent set of benefits, including PERS retirement benefits (pays employer and partial employee share), employee health, dental and vision plan contributions, a health and wellness program, and Agency-paid deferred compensation of 8% of salary.  (see Agency website for list of full benefits)

  • Serve as project manager for the most complex projects that the Agency is responsible for delivering under the Measure X program, the State Transportation Improvement Program, and other programs in coordination with Caltrans and other partner agencies.
  • Review and provide assistance to member agencies on the design of local projects to maximize the use of the innovative and effective safe street designs to reduce injury collisions and fatalities, while facilitating walking and bicycling and improving traffic flow.
  • Oversee consultant or contractor work including preparing requests for proposals, consultant selection documentation or advertisements for bids, instructions to bidders, and detailed specifications; reviewing and providing feedback on consultant deliverables; reviewing invoices.
  • Serve as a mentor to other transportation project managers within the Transportation Agency.
  • Prepare (or oversee consultant preparation of) preliminary studies, reports, designs, calculations, cost estimates, maps, and plans.
  • Make presentations before public, government decision-making bodies.
  • Write documents including staff reports, consultant scopes of work and other documentation.


  • Experience with project management and delivery of transportation projects from inception to open to the public, including corridor studies, project initiation documents, environmental review, engineering design, preparation of plans and specs, construction management and construction. 
  • Knowledge of and experience with Caltrans project development requirements, and state and federal procurement processes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing, including preparation of staff reports, studies, and plans utilizing technical and statistical information, computer systems and transportation-related software applications.
  • Ability to convey complex engineering information and transportation data into easy-to-understand oral presentations before members of the public, governing bodies and the Transportation Agency Board of Directors.
  • Experienced with community outreach and engagement; ability to interact with people of different racial, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds; ability to present to a diverse range of communities.
  • Education: equivalent to a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.
  • Registration as a Civil or Traffic Engineer in California (traffic engineer registration is a plus).
