This position is responsible for scheduling Geometry, Sperry, and Autonomous Track Inspection Vehicle as well as other Machine Vision or special inspections.  Analyzing the data to prioritize maintenance and Capital work. Document trends based on the data and then forecast future work programs. Maintain a record of all repairs made to ensure FRA compliance. The programs shall maintain the track infrastructure in a state of good repair throughout Metro-North Railroad territory, which includes the Hudson, Harlem, Beacon, Port Jervis and New Haven Lines and Branch Lines.


Schedule all Geometry, Sperry, Machine Vision and Autonomous Track Inspection Vehicle inspections throughout Metro-North territory.

Perform quantitative and qualitative analysis of track geometry data and assist the maintenance forces to locate, verify, correct and document the repair of the defects and conditions.

Review data to identify trends for forecasting future needs and improvement programs.

Participate and coordinate the procurement, testing and operation of the Track Geometry Car and other inspection equipment. 

Analyze data and recommend maintenance and/or capital programs required to achieve and maintain track structure in a state of good repair.

Coordinate projects with department managers to ensure maximum productivity and efficiency.

Maintain a record of all inspections and repairs ensure compliance with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and Internal Controls requirements.


Strong knowledge of civil engineering, geometry, site design and layout.

Strong knowledge of track structure and special track work.

Strong verbal presentation and written communication skills.

Strong decision making skills.

Strong project management and coordination skills which includes quality control and quality assurance measures.

Ability to stay current on track infrastructure issues as related to railroad activities including Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) standards.

Knowledge MS Office Suite and/or comparable PC applications.

Availability to be on call 24 hours per day, 7 days per week as required.

Valid driver’s license.


Knowledge of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and methods.

Knowledge of AutoCAD, MicroStation, Civil Software Design, and/or analysis packages.

Strong knowledge of track including repair, rehabilitation and construction of track and the materials and equipment associated with the work.

Fundamentals of Engineering Certificate (EIT - Engineer in Training).

Experience in civil engineering design and site layout in a rail operations environment.


Bachelor's of Science or Bachelor's of Engineering in Civil Engineering and/or related field from an ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) accredited school.

Minimum of five (5) years of experience in project management, design or construction with adherence to deadlines.


New York State and Connecticut Professional Engineering License or ability to gain reciprocity from other states.

Knowledge of Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations and American Railway Engineering and Maintenance of Way (AREMA) standards.

Knowledge of railroad operations.

Construction management experience


This is a federally regulated position subject to both pre-employment and continuous random toxicological screening.

As an employee of Metro-North Railroad you may be required to complete a New York State financial disclosure statement, if you earn more than $97,448.00 or if you hold a position designated as a policy maker.

Effective September 2017, all full-time non-agreement personnel other than those directly involved with the movement of trains or delivery of service, or assigned to other emergency response teams, are required to serve in the Station Terminal Auxiliary Response (STAR) program requiring Terminal coverage for Grand Central Terminal (GCT) from 4:30 PM-7:30 PM one week per year or responding to Station STAR duty during a service disruption, system-wide at various hours including nights and weekends.   This program is designed to improve Metro-North’s ability to provide customer service during emergencies that impact service delivery or other service disruptions that require staff to provide directions and information to MNR customers at GCT or outlying stations. Please note, hours worked during your participation week are subject to change

Additional Criteria for Current Employees: Current Metro-North employees must be in active service to be eligible for consideration. Agreement Employees applying for a position outside of their present craft are required to have worked in your current union for at least one (1) year preceding the Application Deadline to be eligible to apply for a posted position, and have completed the agreed upon formal training commitment, including on-the-job training or lock-in requirement, if applicable (for example: Signal Trainee, Foreman-In-Training, etc.). If you are transferring to another craft, you may be required to forfeit your seniority in your present union. Non-agreement employees must have worked in your current position for a minimum of one (1) year preceding the Application Deadline. Along with a background investigation (including but not limited to, employment, education, and criminal history), employees are also subject to an internal investigation, which includes an evaluation not limited to discipline records and performance assessments.
