Job Title:                                  Crane Operator

Division/Department:                 Operations

Reports to:                               Structures Superintendent

Location:                                  Durham, North Carolina

FSLA:                                       Non-exempt



The Crane Operator is responsible for operating a stationary or traveling crane to lift, move, position, and reposition loads.  The Operator controls crane functions by depressing buttons and foot pedals as well as manipulating levers.  He/ She will receive direction from riggers and/or site supervision via verbal or hand signals to determine required load movement.  He/ She will maintain daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly inspections.  They will be responsible for basic maintenance of crane and rigging associated with operations.  The Crane Operator will notify the chain of command of any defaults with crane or rigging.



  • Maintain a safe and productive crane, including performing routine maintenance
  • Inspect work sites to ensure safety of workers
  • Support structures operations, including but not limited to, forming substructure, setting steel and concrete girders, and placing reinforced concrete decks
  • Check radius and set up of crane before operations begin
  • Provide Input on lift plans and means and methods
  • Work closely with foreman on issues of safety and toolbox talks
  • Performs other duties as assigned



  • Possess a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and ANSI standards in crane operations
  • NCCCO certified or equivalent
  • 3-5 years experience in Heavy Civil Projects and Pile Driving
  • Prior experience leading crews is strongly preferred
  • Must have prior experience in rigging and signaling
  • Must have prior  experience in bridge operations
  • Must have the ability to communicate in a clear and concise manor (verbal and written)
  • Must have the ability to read and understand heavy construction plans
  • Experience operating additional equipment is strongly preferred
  • Must be able to work overtime and be flexible with hours (day/night/weekend)
  • Must be able to work in a team environment and must work well under pressure
  • Must be accustomed to working in an outside environment
