To direct and manage a team of facilities staff, consultants and contractors responsible for the overall development of facility condition assessments, programs of work to address facility and major building systems upgrades / renovations/systems planned, preventative and deferred maintenance, Campus-wide utility & infrastructure planning, larger planning design & construction programs and projects, campus master planning, to communicate project requirements, to make recommendations and to monitor project design and development in relation to major & minor capital projects. To establish, manage, communicate, update, priorities, budget and schedule the design and construction of major capital projects as required, including soliciting proposals, consideration of contract requirements and managing consultant activities of architects, engineers, etc. and to assist the AVP in selection of consultants for major capital projects. To communicate and coordinate project design and construction activities with University Administration/clients and to prepare project information required for UAB Administration/Board of Trustees including status reports, project summaries, project planning reports; to identify, research and prepare applications for funding for government grants for planning projects.


  • Provides primary leadership for a group of employees who deliver: life cycle cost and total cost of ownership analysis, deferred maintenance tracking & reporting, facility condition assessments, project documentation & buildings permanent history record (as-built, etc.). Capital planning support/reporting, campus planning, facilities/project programming, business development/planning, comprehensive campaign support (facility initiatives), special projects, and the associated reports/submittals to facilitate University approvals.
  • Provides direction and oversight of scope, priorities, budgets and schedules on multiple large capital projects ranging from small renovations to planning, design and construction of large land area studies and related construction projects. Coordinates and guides the design firm and construction contractor selection process for all capital projects.
  • Manages the team which reviews prepared contracts to ensure compliance with terms and University standards. Assures quality planning and design project scopes, schedules and budgets and when needed, develops strategies for rapid completion of emergency projects.
  • Manages the team which maintains project records, databases, as-built drawings, minutes of meetings, bid proposals and knowledge of current trends and developments. Attends various committee/department/project meetings and other related conferences and seminars.

ANNUAL RATE OF PAY:   $85,092.80- $123,281.60  (Commensurate with qualifications and experience)


  • Bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Planning, Building Science, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field and six (6) years of related experience required.  Master's degree and four (4) years or PhD and two (2) years acceptable substitutions.  Registration as a Professional Mechanical or Electrical Engineer or Registered Architect is STRONGLY preferred.
  • The ideal candidate should have experience in Facilities Management, Condition Assessment, Staff Management, and Energy Management.
  • Driver’s License valid in the State of Alabama required.
  • Candidate must possess the necessary physical requirements, with or without the aid of mechanical devices, to safely perform the duties and responsibilities of this position to include:
    • Climbing stairs, ladders and scaffolding, and working at heights above thirty (30) feet.
    • Performing tasks requiring bending, stooping, kneeling, and walking significant distances between and within buildings on campus.
