Assistant Civil Engineer

As the steward of nearly 30,000 acres of parkland, the Department of Parks & Recreation (Parks) is a recognized leader and innovator of public spaces.  Within the division of Citywide Technical Services (CWS) the Capital Unit works in direct partnership with Parks leadership, and other City Agencies, to assess, design and reconstruct facilities most in need of improvements.  The Capital unit at CWS strives for design excellence to support the City’s sustainability goals.  Assistant Civil Engineer, the selected candidate will be responsible for technical assessments and recommendations and the management of engineering consultant contracts that support our design goals.

Major Responsibilities:

• Under supervision, perform civil engineering work of moderate difficulty and responsibility for our Capital Unit within Citywide Services. Assist in managing multiple consultant site work contracts within an established schedule and budget. 

• Prepare civil engineering contract drawings, specifications and estimates of quantities.

• Develop request for proposals for site work services

• Organize and communicate stakeholder comments for consultant contract drawings, specifications, and construction estimates; and submit reports.

• Review and approve consultant payment requests

• Monitor consultant resident engineers performing construction supervision, tracking progress of construction, including consultant’s review and approval of shop drawings. Conduct occasional site inspections for quality assurance.

• Assist consultant resident engineer to resolve issues that develop during construction

• Conduct site inspections for quality assurance.

Qualification Requirements: 

1. A baccalaureate degree in civil engineering from an accredited college and one (1) year of full-time satisfactory experience in civil engineering work; or

2. A baccalaureate degree in civil engineering from an accredited college and a master’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college. A master’s degree in civil engineering from an accredited college can only be used to substitute for one year of full-time satisfactory work experience in civil engineering.

A degree in any other engineering area, or in any engineering technology area, is not acceptable.

This position is exempt from NYC residency requirements.

Note: A Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in New York State may be required for certain assignments. If required, this license must be maintained for the duration of the assignment.

Preferred Skills/Qualifications:

1. Candidate holds a permanent or non-competitive title.

2. Demonstrated ability to design and complete Civil Engineering projects as demonstrated by a portfolio.

3. Demonstrated experience executing any design and construction project within the City of New York.

4. 1 year of experience managing design and/or construction management consultant(s) for a municipal project

5. Knowledge of AutoCAD.

6. Knowledge of PhotoShop, PowerPoint and 3D rendering.

7. Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.

8. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.  

9. Driver license valid in New York State.

10. A valid New York State Registration as a Professional Engineer.

Salary: $70,000 - $75,000 plus excellent benefits
