To perform structural engineering analyses and design, manage preparation of plans and specifications, and manage construction to ensure that projects remain within budget constraints and that appropriate requirements of Metro-North Railroad are met.


  • Project manager responsible for development of project plans including work scope, budget, and schedules for capital projects intended to repair or replace railroad infrastructure such as tunnels, bridges and track.
  • Project manager responsible for the inspection and design phases of capital projects related to infrastructure, particularly bridges and tunnels, including oversight of consultants performing inspection and design on those projects.  Ensure conformance with the Railroad’s design criteria and that the project may be safely constructed with minimal impact on Railroad operations.
  • Project manager responsible for construction of repair and rehabilitation projects relating to the Railroad’s infrastructure including oversight of contractors and force account personnel employed by the Railroad to perform the construction.  Ensure conformance to cost and schedule objectives while maintaining safety and on-time performance goals.
  • Inspection, analysis and design of repairs to various infrastructure elements ensuring conformance to applicable design codes including American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA) and New York State requirements.
  • Accurately track project progress and provide accurate reporting of that information for projects associated with the Railroad’s Capital Program.
  • Review and provide comments on structural analysis and design computations.


  • Ability to supervise preparation of plans and specifications by private consultants under contract to the Railroad.
  • Familiarity with American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association (AREMA), American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), American Concrete Institute (ACI) and other engineering codes and requirements of New York State.
  • Working knowledge of project management and construction management with due consideration for safety, QA/QC, administration of design and construction contracts and familiarity with Railroad operations.
  • Strong management and coordination skills are required to plan, supervise and implement capital projects.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are required to provide project information both internally and externally to the Railroad.
  • Knowledge of MS Office Suite and/or comparable PC applications.
  • Familiarity with critical path method (CPM) scheduling.
  • Personal abilities of motivation, self-starter and persistence while motivating others.
  • Ability to be on call for emergencies as needed.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.


  • Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in civil/structural engineering including bridges, tunnels, and site design.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience managing projects and/or staff.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License, New York State (or with ability for New York State reciprocity).


This is a safety sensitive position and subject to toxicological testing.

For applicants who are current employees, you must be in active service and have worked in your present position for at least one (1) year to be eligible to apply for a posted position, and have completed the agreed upon formal training commitment, plus on-the-job training, if applicable (for example: Signal Trainee, Foreman-In-Training, etc.) in order to be eligible to transfer. If you are transferred, you may be required to forfeit your seniority in your present occupation. In addition, Metro-North employees are subjected to an internal investigation, which includes an evaluation of their safety and discipline records and their performance assessments.
