The Marin County Community Development Agency is hiring for a Principal Civil Engineer/Architect. Under general direction, the Principal Civil Engineer/Architect will oversee the Building and Safety Division’s plan review program. They will work to identify and implement strategies and initiatives to improve the customer experience and streamline the plan check process with a goal of reducing review time. The Principal Civil Engineer/Architect will coordinate reviews with other departments and outside agencies, assist in daily division operations, and supervise plan reviews and building permit issuances for residential and commercial structures. The Principal Civil Engineer/Architect assigns, trains, instructs and evaluates the work of building plan review staff and takes an active role in performance management, coaching and team development. Additionally, they will directly supervise plan review staff and may act as the Chief Building Official in his or her absence, serve on a variety of boards, commissions and committees; conduct presentations and participate in public speaking engagements and prepare and present staff reports and other necessary correspondence.

Our Highly Qualified Candidate possesses recent supervisory experience, as well as journey-level building plan review experience working within a municipal, or other governmental jurisdiction. They have knowledge of California building codes and all related regulations for enforcement, construction methods, building materials, tools, and safety standards, and engineering principles and details used in the design of buildings or soils construction. They will demonstrate the ability to successfully coordinate and manage staff and the activities of a municipal building department, while also establishing and cultivating strong relationships across departmental lines with a diverse group of staff and permit customers. They are a progressive problem solver with strong communication and coaching skills and meticulous record keeping habits.
